Old customs, genuine crafts and Valais culture are brought back to life at the Traditions-Wuchunänd on Bettmeralp. Under the motto «Inschi Choscht, inschers Handwärch, inschi Traditione!», a weekend full of music, culinary delights, history and living tradition awaits you.

It starts with a tour through the quaint village of Betten - the origin of today's Bettmeralp. The tour will be led by Edelbert Mattig, who will provide fascinating insights into the history and former life of the village. Afterwards, he invites you to enjoy a Valais «z'Abund».

On Saturday, a street festival awaits you with traditional music, crafts and delicacies from times gone by. A guest canton will be represented by a yodelling association and will provide musical accompaniment to both the field mass in the morning and the street festival.

On Sunday, Gilihüsine is on the program - the original form of hornussen. On beautiful Sunday afternoons, the Bettmers used to go up to the Bettmersee to play gilihüsine with great enthusiasm on the gently sloping terrain below the lake. This beautiful old tradition is now being revived on Bettmeralp.

Whether young or old, expert or beginner: everyone is welcome to watch the traditional game, try it out for themselves or even take part in the tournament with their own team.

The detailed program 2026 will follow.

More information

The game briefly explained:

Gilihüsine doesn't require much: two teams of six people, hitting sticks, a leg cow (hitting object), shingles (intercepting board for deflecting) and the pitch (playing field).
The teams are divided into a hitting party, which stands outside the playing field, and those who stand in the playing field, protected by shingles, and have to deflect the projectile.
One after the other from the batting party now tries to drive the leg cow into the playing field with a powerful blow.
If the leg cow falls to the ground in the field without being intercepted, the batting party receives a point. The same applies if the projectile hits a player of the opposing team.
If a fielder is able to intercept the leg cow with a shingle, the batsman must retire. This also applies if the batsman hits the ball three times into the void or knocks the leg cow out of the field.

A round lasts until all the beaters have had their turn. In the old fashioned way, the losers pay for the subsequent drink for the winning players.
