The Aletsch Grattour snowshoe hike and Aletschwald UNESCO hike both start off from Moosfluh – with views of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The snowshoe tour leader decides whether winter hikes go ahead based on the weather conditions in the Aletsch Arena.
Aletsch Grattour snowshoe hike
The Aletsch Grattour is a guided snowshoe hike of about 3.5 hours. It begins with a cable car ride with your snowshoe guide up to Moosfluh. This winter hike in the Aletsch Arena takes you past some striking rock formations towards Biel. Along the wide mountain ridge one of many possible routes leads past the Hohfluh to Riederfurka. Before making your way down to Riederalp, your snowshoe adventure in the Alps includes a short detour to the Pro Natura Centre (Villa Cassel). Conditions permitting, you’ll then hike along the Casselweg trail to the viewing platform with its spectacular views of the Gibidum dam down below.
Aletschwald UNESCO
After a gondola ride up to Moosfluh, you set off down to the 11,000-year-old moraine. High up above the glacier and far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, this winter hike in the Aletsch Arena takes you through an enchanting fairytale forest and allows you to enjoy the wintery tranquillity of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the snowshoe hike, you’ll spot gnarled stone pines and trails of hares, foxes and squirrels along the way. You can stop off for a bite to eat on the Riederfurka if you’re feeling peckish. Otherwise just carry on downhill to Riederalp at your own pace. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can opt for the direct descent on this snowshoe hike.
