"The Titan of the Alps and the reversed vow"
The Great Aletsch glacier, located in the Swiss Canton of Valais, is the largest and widest glacier of the Alps with its 23 km long gigantic ice stream. The people living in its vicinity, scared by its increasing size, once made a vow to live virtuously and to pray against the growth of the Aletsch glacier causing natural disasters. Their vow to stop its expanding size was personally approved by Pope Innocent XI. Up until this day, every year, the people of the Valais renew their vow in a solemn procession – however, with the difference that this time their vow is reversed and they are praying that the glacier does not melt any further due to global warming. And like so many years before, they have the official approval of the Holy Father.
