Marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Bettmeralp visionary Franz Mattig

“S Franzi”, as he was affectionately called, was something of an institution in the village community, a mover and shaker, an “ärduliebu Mänsch”, as they say in Valais, and above all a visionary.

The son of a Bettmer native, who grew up in Stalden and became a stationmaster, already saw the beauty and tourist potential of Bettmeralp 60 years ago, where he had spent his holidays from an early age.

In 1962 he gave up his job, opened a sports shop in Bettmeralp and founded the ski school at the same time. He managed this for the next 29 years and was still attending the Monday briefing and subsequent drinks until shortly before his death.

Franz has now been gone from this world for ten years, but his love for Bettmeralp, for skiing, his passion for the Mattig Sport shop and for the bijoux hotel La Cabane, which was built later, lives on in his wife Lydia, his two daughters with their families.
