Holidays in the village of chestnuts
------------------------------------

Only a few kilometres separate the Alpine town of Brig and Mörel-Filet at 760m altitude. From the town, the holiday guests arrive at the village and, with Mörel-Filet, at the doorway to the Aletsch Arena. From here, they go on  in summer and pursue  in winter. Then in autumn the sweet chestnuts ascend to the throne. The region has a long tradition involving the exquisite nut fruit. Or for a special kind of experience in Mörel-Filet, pay a visit to the  of mountain crystals. But there’s more: thanks to the holiday and spa resort in Breiten, which is located within the boundaries of the village in the valley, there are also plenty of recreational opportunities in Mörel-Filet. After all, what more enjoyable way to conclude an active day in the great outdoors than letting your muscles relax in the waters of the brine pool at the ? – Incidentally the only recognised brine spa in the Alps.

 

### On the Trail of the sweet chestnut

Mörel-Filet is known as the village of chestnuts. The sweet chestnut tree was mentioned in connection with the village as far back as 1279. Around that time, the villagers planted chestnut trees as a source of food for the poor. In 2003, Mörel-Filet decided to recultivate the old Salzgäb chestnut grove above the village, replant it and turn the area into a forest reserve. Read all about the sweet-chestnut tradition on the information boards lining the themed trail from Mörel-Filet up to the chestnut grove. The leisurely walk takes about an hour-and-a-quarter.
